Dear colleagues and friends,
As I work on last minute preparations for the ESMO Congress, I want express how honoured I am to represent you as President. I can feel the excitement in these days leading up to the Congress. I want to share this excitement with you, and let you know how proud I am of what we’ve accomplished together.
As interaction with the ESMO staff and the many external Congress contributors intensifies, and we put the final touches on many of our presentations, construction in IFEMA congress centre is already well underway. Oncologists from all over the world are activating their “out of office” messages and getting ready to travel to the most important meeting for the medical oncology profession in Europe. We won’t let you down - ESMO 2014 looks to be ESMO’s most important Congress yet!
The pre-Congress registration numbers indicate a 25% increase compared to the 2012 Congress in Vienna, and the abstract numbers show a 24% increase, with 2,754 abstracts submitted and 1,551 accepted for presentation in Madrid.
The ESMO Congress is one of the most important moments in the year for the international oncology community. From the composition of our congress committees, the abstract submitters, the industry representation and the delegates themselves, this is truly a global collaboration and nothing is better than face-to-face contact and information exchange.
I also have good news regarding membership. We are nearing the 10,000 member-mark, making ESMO an even more robust and international society.
In the past 10 years we have seen rapid growth and expansion of ESMO membership. This is due to leaders whose vision and guidance have brought ESMO where it is today, and through the hard work of the ESMO Officers in Committees, Working groups, Task Forces and the fully-dedicated ESMO staff, all of whom will be onsite in Madrid.
Breaking news! Non-embargoed oral presentations (Proffered Papers) are online as of 12:00 today. LBAs will be made public at the beginning of the official Congress session during which they are presented or, if included in the ESMO Press Programme, at the end of the official Press Conference.
The Congress is the best of ESMO and the best of our profession. Science and education, new product launches, face-to-face exchange and real progress for patients.
Membership Activities in Madrid
We will have 3 points for members onsite in Madrid. You’ll find the first at the Membership Services Desks in the registration area, so you can skip the long queue at registration. The Membership Booth and Services Centre will be located in the Exhibition at S1 & S2. Finally, a member-favourite, the exclusive Members' Lounge will be located in Hall 10. ESMO Staff will be available in all 3 areas and I encourage you to come by to say hello and learn more about the special Madrid membership offer. Our goal is to help you make the most of your Congress experience! More important than the growth and the success of the Congress is the potential for patient benefit. That is really what this is all about. The theme for ESMO 2014 is “Precision Medicine in Cancer Care” and I truly hope this Congress can help oncologists come closer to delivering on this promise of better outcome for patients. I look forward to wishing you bienvenidos a Madrid! Rolf A. Stahel ESMO & Congress President
